Are You Smart?

Benjamin R. Barber once said, "I don't divide the world into the weak and the strong, or the success and the failures. I divide the world into the learners and non-learners."

We all are born learners. Just look at the infants, learning to walk, falling, and getting up without fear of humiliation and judgment. But as we grow up, most people become afraid of challenges. The fear of validation and not being 'smart' encounters them. The so-called "FIXED MINDSET."

Hello Reader, this is Haris & you are reading the second issue of Mentoraven - A weekly newsletter for your personal growth.

Mindset?

As per the remarkable book 'Mindset' by Dr. Carol S. Dweck, there are two types of mindsets. Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset.

A growth mindset means that, you believe your intelligence and talents can be developed over time by seeking challenges. A fixed mindset means that you think intelligence is fixed, so if you are not good at something, you will never be good at it.

Ask yourself

Ask yourself. When are you smart?

Fixed Mindset will be:

  • When I am flawless.
  • When I do things perfectly.
  • When it is easy for me.

And Growth Mindset will be:

  • When it's really hard, and I work hard on it.
  • When I can do something that I couldn't do before.
  • When I learn new things.

People with a Fixed Mindset always have a tint of "I can't do that," while the Growth Mindset says, "I can do that if I put the required efforts."

Ye Growth Mindset Kaha Milega?

Fostering a Growth Mindset is easy. Once you realize its effect, you'll be amazed and inclined to maintain it.

  1. Appreciate the Process of the Results: Don't get obsessed with the results. Make sure you learn as much as possible during the process.
  2. Your Weakness is not a demon: Don't be afraid of your weaknesses. Acknowledge and work on it.
  3. You don't fail - you learn: Change your perspective on failure to an opportunity of learning.
  4. Talent is made - not born: Every successful person you see today has worked their way to the top. Trust me, they don't have a genie.
  5. Don't chase other people's validation: When you prioritize approval over learning, you sacrifice your own potential for growth.
  6. It's hard to make changes, but worth it.
  7. Buy the book Mindset, on special discount.

Me and my Whiteboard

When I started my journey as an entrepreneur, I always wondered If I could have that latest MacBook Pro, then I would have been on another level. But with time and this book, I understood the meaning of the famous guitarist saying, "Tone is in your fingers." Tone You can buy the same guitar, pick, and amplifier that Jimi Hendrix uses, but as you'll be hitting up that string, you'll sound like YOU. Likewise, Jimi Hendrix could pick up any random cheap guitar, & still, it will be easy to...

[Hypothetically] You have a deadline to write an essay, so you decide to work on it. You sat down on your desk and opened the notebook.
